We understand there has been increased interest in weight loss injections following recent media coverage. While these medications (such as Wegovy® and Mounjaro®) are now approved for NHS use in certain cases, they are not available on request and cannot be prescribed routinely in general practice.
NHS Eligibility Criteria
Weight loss injections are only available on the NHS if:
• You are referred to and accepted by a Tier 3 NHS specialist weight management service.
• You meet the strict clinical criteria set out by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), including:
• A BMI of 35 or above (adjusted for ethnicity),
• At least one weight-related health condition (e.g. type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea),
• A commitment to engage in a structured lifestyle programme.
These medications must be initiated and monitored by a specialist team. GPs are not permitted to prescribe them outside of this pathway.
🩺 What We Can Do
If you believe you may be eligible, we can:
• Assess your suitability for referral to a Tier 3 NHS weight management service.
• Offer support with lifestyle advice and weight management strategies in the meantime.
We appreciate your understanding as we follow national guidance to ensure safe, fair, and clinically appropriate care.
